Member for Bendigo West, Maree Edwards has called on Central Victorians to show their generosity and donate unwanted clothes to their local Op Shop for the inaugural National Op Shop Week event 24-30 September.

“According to research undertaken by the British Government, consumers in the United Kingdom have $AUS46.5 billion worth of clothes they haven’t worn for a year or more hanging in their wardrobes.”

“Given that Australians have a similar passion for clothes as our UK counterparts, we potentially have billions of dollars of unsed clothing that could be donated.”

The call to donate by Ms Edwards comes as research shows that while more and more Australians are turning to charity shops to buy clothes, actual donations are getting less and less.

“The initiative for the campaign to reverse this trend comes from the ‘Do Something!’ charity, and I applaud their enterprise and hope that the Central Victorian communities show their generosity and get behind the campaign,” Ms Edwards said.

“All that is being asked is that residents have a ‘spring clean for charity’ and go through their wardrobes donate unwanted and unused quality clothing to your nearest charity shop.”

“If any resident is unsure of where to drop their donations there is a list of 2000 Australian charity stores on the Do Something! website,”
